Meadows near Suchowola with some Rough-legged Buzzards (8) and Common Buzzards (6), 1 Great Grey Shrike, 19 Black Grouses and a flock of 20 Bullfinches feeding with 10 Waxwings.

Some wintering waterfowl near Bialystok town: Little Grebe (3), Mute Swans (8), Mallards (30). Male Hen Harrier migrating west in the morning, quite late bird.

Knyszynska Forest covered with thin snow. Some local Nutcrackers, Hazelhen, Sparrowhawk and fe Bullfinches sotuh of Suprasl in "Las Cieliczanski" Reserve.

During Wintering Birds Census some nice birds recorded: 60 Redpolls, 66 Snow Buntings, ca 600 Mallards, some Bewick Swans at Biebrza Marshes, 3 Rough-legged Buzzards (SMALL numbers!), 1 Hen Harrier, 2 Kingfishers.

Almost spring weather in Biebrza Marshes. Large floods near Wizna and Brzostowo. Flocks of Bewick Swans (25), Whooper Swans (20), Geese (110 Bean, 80 WhiteFronts). Snow Buntings passing by (47), 3 Hen Harriers.

Some local birds from Knyszynska Forest: 7 pairs of Hazelhen, 1 Three-toed Woodpecker, 1 Middle Spotted Woodpecker. Over 100 Waxwings reported from Bialystok town.

Snow cover still lasting and the temperature rather low. Shore Larks (70) feeding near Nowa Luka (regional high count), 25 Twites. Big flock of Smew (87) at Siemianowka Reservoir. Still many Waxwings and single "strange calling" Bullfinches in the Region.

Black-throated Divers (2), Slavonian Grebe, 68 Smew at Siemianowka Reservoir.

Six males Black Grouse in Brzozówka Valley with several Rough-legged Buzzards. Quite chilli and snowy at times. Gruoup of 30 Shore Larks feeding in field near Dolistowo (Biebrza Marshes). Some ducks and swans (15) as well as late Pochard and Tufted Duck near Knyszyn-Zamek.

Flock of 19 males and 2 females Black Grouse feeding in Biebrza Valley. Two Redpolls, 6 Rough legged Buzzards there too.

Dojlidy Fish-ponds: 2 Goosanders, female Goldeneye, flock of Bearded Tits.

Flock of 16 Whooper Swans still at Dojlidy Fish-ponds near Bialystok.

Black-throated (4) and Red-throated Divers (1) at Siemianowka Reservoir. Still 17 late Great White Egrets due to calm weather (no snow so far).

Single AZURE TIT !! in flock of other tits observed in Bialowieza. Birds stayed in reedbeds near Narewka River. Attempts to relocate it in the afternoon failed. This was the third regional record.

In Biebrza Valley a female Bullfinch with strange, high voice passing over (possibly of eastern origin as suspected in other european countries).

Roughly 250 Golden Plovers near Bronowo in Narew Valley. Still many Herring/Caspian Gulls at jez Zygmunta Augusta (ca 20) and near Knyszyn (ca 30).

Female Merlin near Brzostowo (Biebrza Marshes), 17 Whooper Swans and ca 200 Greylag Geese. The valley seems to be well flooded. Days cloudy and foggy.

Immature White-tailed Eagle saved from drought at Zygmunt August Lake. The bird got into deep mud while (probably) chasing some fish.

Rather warm October brought first flocks of Waxwings (near Bialowieza Forest) and Red-throated Diver in Bondary (Siemianowka Reservoir).

Migrating Osprey and flock of 60 Siskins at fields south of Krynki (eastern border near Belarus). Also some other raptors poassing like Buzzards, Sparrowhawks and Goshawks.

Water level at Siemianowka Reservoir slowly dropping down. Some waders like Greenshank or Little Stint present. After rather rainy morning the afternoon brought good numbers of raptors (11 species) including LS Eagle, WT Eagle, Hobby, 3 Harrier species, Osprey and Honey Buzzard.

Nice floodings at Zabiele (Biebrza Marshes) created good habitat for shorebirds: unusual here Turnstone, 2 Golden Plovers, flock of Ruff, over 500 Lapwings, Spotted Redshanks, Greenshank and hunitng White-tailed Eagle.

Near Tykocin 7 Bee-eaters sitting on wires (a family) with two other nestholes occupied. Lesser Spotted Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, 2 Temminck Stints and 8 Great White Egrets at Siemianowka Reservoir.

Honey Buzzard, Lesser Spotted Eagle and Crossbills passing west (9 and 2) near Losininiany by Belarus border. It seems the influx of Crossbills continues with several observations daily.

Bee-eater family of 9 birds watched near Tykocin with another pair still feeding. It seems two pairs will be succesful this year with several others in western Poland.

!! Great Norther Diver !! discovered at Popielewo fish ponds - small complex located on the edge of Knyszynska Forest. It's second regional and 45th Polish record.

Incubating Nightjar observed well in Knyszynska Forest which may be a stronghold of this species (lots of managed parts, clearcuts as well as older woods).

Pair of Citrine Wagtails near Siemieniakowszczyzna and Lesser Spotted Eagle fighting with Buzzard there. Also numerous Whiskered Terns at Siemianowka Lake.

Dojlidy Fish-ponds near Bialystok visited in the evening. Two Grey Herons together with Little Egret make nice surprise after hard work day :) Few males of Garganey and Shoveler prove breeding of these species this year. Also Whiskered Terns flying around may be suspected of nesting.

Calm and warm floodings near Bronowo in Narew Valley attracted flocks of Bewick's Swans (ca 80), Whooper Swans, Wigeons (ca 600) and huge gathering of Golden Plovers (ca 1500). Some nice swans also near Zajki in Narew Valley and further north in Biebrza Marshes displaying Balck-tailed Godwits, Curlews and Harriers. Ruff are already in good numbers.

Lesser Spotted Eagles, Garganeys and Redhanks near Dolistowo in Biebrza Valley.Furthermore 100 Golden Plovers near Laskowiec and 1 male+2 females Black Grouse at Gonczarowska Dam in Lower Biebrza Basin. One Spotted Eagle near Wolka Piaseczna, first Dunlin near Brzostowo.In Dojlidy fish-ponds 4 Great White Egrets, 3 Mediterranean Gulls make Sunday a nice birding experience with numerous birdwatchers there.

Big flocks of Black-headed Gulls, Swans and Geese in Biebrza Valley. First Shovelers, groups of Ruff and Wood Sandpipers had arrived. Storks passing over northwards. Single White-tailed Eagles and Cranes wandering in their territories.

In Dojlidy Fish-ponds first Red-necked Grebes and Bittern. Single Lesser Black-backed Gull together with larger and paler gull resembling Heuglin's Gull (but distant).

Meadows of Grady-Woniecko and Bronowo full of Lapwings, Geese (few thousands) and Golden Plovers (at least 900). Countless Wigeon whistling around. One Elk wandering in willows near Wizna.  In Brzostowo 200 Bewick's Swans, 4 WT Eagles (incl 1 pale individual), 64 Whooper Swans, 4 Elks.
Masses of Geese and Ducks reported also by Piotr Klosowski from Dolistowo area. Also Cranes, Great Grey Shrike, Rough-legged Buzzards, Redshanks and 2 Curlews.

Over 2400 White-fronted Geese feeding near Kurpiki in Narew Valley, one Barnacle Geese among them. In Brzostowo 240 Bewick's Swans, ca 700 Wigeon, small groups of Ruff. Single Spotted Eagle near Zajki.

Fields near Ostrówek covered by slowly melting snow. Groups of Skylarks pass over with Shore Larks (5) and one Meadow Pipit - first this year. Single male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker feeding in small bushes. Two Rough-legged Buzzards feeding in the fields together with Sparrowhawk waiting for Yellowhammers.

In Biebrza Valley bird migration still delayed - first Black-headed Gull reached Goniadz, skylarks singing in the fields and Greylag Geese walking by the reedbeds. White-tailed Eagles flying over their territories near Kopytkowo, adn two more adults in Brzozowka Valley near Suchowola. In the fields 4 Snow Buntings feeding at gravel road.

Wintering Water Rails (2) near Bialystok at Biala River or one of the earliest arrivals. Nearby also 35 Redpolls and 1 Teal (recently rare winter visitor).
In Biebrza Valley just few signs of approaching spring - group of swans and geese attacked by White-tailed Eagle, some Goldeneyes near Wizna and Brzostowo and one more WT Eagle staying in a small forest, perhaps a new territory?

Biebrza Valley still frozen and covered with snow. Some small open water clearings offer feeding opportunities for 3-4 Goldeneyes and 2 Whooper Swans (near Brzostowo) as well as rest for White-fronted Geese (first this year). Nice flock of 160 Greylag Geese feeding near Chyliny and Pluty in the fields. Just by the road 2-3 Elks walking in the pine forest.

In Białystok town large flock of 200 Fieldfares together with 20 Waxwings "clearing" rowan trees. In Ostrówek near the eastern border flock of 25 European Bisons wandering in the fields, as last year (and 2002). They come from the Knyszynska Forest which is ca 10 km away to the west.

One wintering Kestrel near Maliszewo, a pair of Whooper Swans near Wizna in Narew Valley. Fishing Otter on the frozen river. Six more Whooper Swans near Sulin waiting for warmer weather. In Brzostowo (Biebrza Valley) first flocks of Greylag Geese patrolling the valley and neighourhood.

During buzzard count at Maliszewo 37 Rough-legged Buzzards, some Fieldfares and 30 Redpolls. In Brzostowo (Biebrza Valley) 25 Whooper Swans, 120 Geese and one possible Steppe Buzzard. First sings of Spring then :) !!

Siemianówka Reservoir, though still frozen, attracted 4-5 White-tailed Eagles, 14 Goosanders, 3 Wigeon. One hunting Great Grey Shrike at his favourite electric line.

First Skylarks reached NE Poland (Bialystok area) where also a pair of Whooper Swans came back to their breeding territory at Dojlidy fish-ponds. One adult White-tailed Eagle also there. Passing flock of 14 Greylag Geese contribute to "firsts" of this spring.

Although in other parts of the Region wintering raptors are not numerous in Maliszewo area we count:
- 7 Common Buzzards
- 10 Rough-legged Buzzards
- 27 unidentified Buzzards

During Wintering Birds Count between Zlotoria and Tykocin some nice birds were observed: Goosanders - 11, White-tailed Eagle - 1 ad, Grey Heron - 1, some Mallards, Mute Swans as well as one Middle Spotted Woodpecker, 7 Twites (TK, Gaba, Robert Kapowicz).

Buzzard counting in Narew Valley resulted in 11 Rough-legged, 8 Common and 7 unidentified. Some Siskins, one Great Grey Shrike. In Biebrza Marshes 10 Elks (also with young ones).
